Welcome to all members to the March newsletter from your club.
This newsletter is to keep members up to date with the season happenings at Barrington United to the end of the season and note some highlights.
The programme per your handbook has been amended through postponement to read: Saturday 24th March – Presidents Fours – if postponed Saturday 14th April 1pm. Thursday 29th March – House of Hearing half day triples mixed, Roger Norton arranging. 12.30pm. Saturday 31st March – Thompson Drawn Triples 1pm start. Thursday 5th April – Bernie Morgan Mixed Drawn Pairs – 1pm start. Saturday 7th April – Morrie Bell Tray Mixed Drawn Triples – 1pm start. Tuesday 10th April – Mid Week Triples – Drawn Mixed – 1pm start. Postponed from 22nd March- start. Thursday 12th April – Monthly half day Mixed Open Triples – 12.30pm start. Saturday 14th April – either Mini tournament 1pm or Presidents Fours – 1pm. Saturday 21st April – Closing day – programme to be advised. Saturday 28th April – Clarke Shield v. St Martins @ St.Martins 1pm. Note all events will require names on white boards please.
We do have three new members, Galen and Jack Bonner and Mike Martin that all started in the New Year from our very successful Have A Go Day that had forty or so people through the gate on our green in late October. Welcome to you all and I know many members have played with these new members since the New Year.
We have some members that have suffered health problems recently, I won’t list these as a might miss someone. Hopefully we see you all back bowling soon or in the new season.
Interclub events entered by Barrington United post Xmas results include Mens Three Threes section winners, well done to all involved. Also we entered the Mens Eights and Womens Eights, Double Triples and Mixed Manning Cup. All enjoyed their games with mixed results.
We had four teams in Tuesday Friendlies and John Chisholm convenor does a great job sorting teams each week. Women Bernie Big event Monday and Men Edwards Cup also Monday between Fendalton, Elmwood Park and Barrington United well managed by Pat McGarva and Gerard Moot. Members of mid week enjoyed these competitions.
Brett Satterthwaite was again selected for the Canterbury Development Squad this season, well done Brett.
Spreydon club have donated a defibrillator unit and we purchased the AED response kit for this unit. Thanks Spreydon. Ten members took part in training for unit use in emergency and refresher courses will be completed yearly also. Hopefully we don’t have to use this but it is there for an emergency by our club alarm inside main lounge door. United Bowling Club funds have been used for a new glass sterilizer for bar and new refrigerator / freezer for kitchen. The board are also progressing shade cloth in front of pavilion for sun protection. These are all part of our improvements over 2017-18 season or the off season.
Casual bowls events have been held throughout this season with two more prior to end of season. Thanks to all who help with these events and these events help out with our club funds.
Mates In Bowls Thanks to all casual bowlers and club members that filled the 14 teams this season. A very successful event over January / February Wednesday evenings. This was sponsored by Tony of Bills Bar & Bistro / Celtic Inn. Thanks to Celia Brown, Betsy Lawton, Janice Brown for help with BBQ, Dave McVicar with bar, Peter Clement with raffles and all others who helped clean up at end of play each evening.

Green
Our green is in excellent condition this season and thanks to all who help prepare the greens along with Max Farrell and also all who help prepare surrounds and gardens. Celia Brown has gardens in good colourful and tidy condition.
Championships and other Club Events
Club Championships are drawing to a close but all members need to focus on finishing prior to Champion of Champion events, our club is entered all these events. Well done to Dave McClelland and Lois Norton for Open Singles wins and Lois Norton and Brett Satterthwaite in the development singles. These Champion of Champion event down to final four and Lois Norton in Open Singles semi final, all the best for finals weekend Lois. Well done to all thus far as all won several rounds. Mens Triples winner were Dave McClelland (Sk) Brett Satterthwaite and Stewart Collins last weekend and Fours last evening – Dave Thompson (Sk) James Price Graeme Walsh and Roy Brown.
Green Etiquette
If you are playing on visiting greens in any event players should refrain from either unsportmen or damaging comments to other club’s playing surfaces or members. Always remember you are representing Barrington United and also two points from the President, respect your marker in Singles matches as they are helping your match and spectators should refrain from coaching players during matches, either refer player to club coaches or discuss any advise to players after their game has finished.
Board News The Annual General Meeting will be due in June. As from April nominations for board will be sort, give this some thought. The Bowls NZ GOLD AWARD is due for renewal in May 2018, this is every two years. This award helps for trust grants and the frame work for this award has our Club plan, Operational procedure and Policies supporting our club direction. The board see this documentation our club development.
